15 Day Book Blogger Challenge Day 4

THB5

The Book Blogger Challenge is hosted by April at Good Books & Good Wine. Stop by her blog to sign up for this fun blogging challenge!!

Day Four’s Challenge asks: What was the last book you flung across the room.

As I’m more of a digital book reader, either audio or ebook format, it’s been a while since I physically flung a book anywhere. So instead I will talk about books I would like to fling across the room. Those would be each and every book that ends in a stupid cliffhanger. I get SO frustrated with this new trend. Most of the fantasy series’ I’m used to reading have books that each can almost be read as standalones. Each one a complete story but all tied together with a larger plot thread. Why can’t it still be like that instead of these cliffhanger endings in books that should NEVER have been split into trilogies but condensed into ONE satisfying read. I would like to chuck the lot of them off a bridge along with whoever decided that cliffhangers should be utilized as a marketing ploy. ---- Well, that was quite a bit more rant-tastic than the challenge question warranted! lol

To name one specific book that I would have liked to have flung off a bridge, I would have to name Amelia Anne is Dead and Gone. That ending was so over the top absurd and implausible that I was furious that I had wasted all of that time reading it just to get to that unsatisfactory outcome!

What about you, are you a book flinger?

I hate books that aren't standalone. To me, it doesn't matter if it is the first, second, or last book of the series. It needs to have a beginning, middle, AND end.

Amelia Anne is Dead and Gone was on my TBR list. I'm writing all kinds of books off my TBR list tonight...shame, I really like the concept.

hello new bestie! I agree - I'm so sick of the trilogy trend as well. Because then they feel like they have to leave each on a cliffhanger. You're right - series fiction can totally be done WITHOUT making each book a freaking legless chair that can't stand on it's own! Ticks me right off. I don't fling books...but I have a friend that does haha.

A legless chair, that's a perfect analogy. I've been on a bit of a anti-cliffhanger mission of late. It seems like EVERY book I read has a cliffhanger. I'm thinking of getting a list of all cliffhangery books and boycotting them! lol

Exactly Lizzy. It's a cheap marketing ploy to try to practically bully the reader into buying the next book.

I always get nervous when someone decides not to read a book because of my opinion, even though in this case I feel quite strongly that the ending was ridiculous. But I can't even bring myself to encourage you to give it a try in case you would like it! lol

I haven't read Amelia Anne is Dead and Gone yet but the ending sounds awful. Even when books are in a series I still like some sort of resolution at the end. I hate when they just end it just is so unsatisfying.

I love cliffhangers. But what I love more is waiting until a series has been completely released so that the cliffhanger ending only lasts as long as it takes to pick up the next book in the series. It helps. Somewhat.

And I haven't heard anything about this book. But "absurd" does not bode well. I would hate to invest all this time in a book to have an ending that just isn't believable. Oh my gosh I totally would have flung the book!

i hate it when a book does something crazy at the end. it's like you've invested so much only to be let down at the end. i think i have an arc someone let me borrow of this book at home somewhere. wonder if i will feel the same.

Oh no! And this book always sounds so appealing whenever I see it on Amazon or a shelf somewhere! It sucks the end was so unsatisfying, I hate when that happens! It's been a long time I've flung a book to since I usually read on my precious iPad and there's no way I'm flinging THAT anywhere! LOL

Loved your rant, so true! So sick of clliffhangers!

I know! It sounded like it would be a wonderful read, and it might have been, if the ending wouldn't have been completely outrageous.

Donna @ The Happy Booker said...

That's exactly how I felt. I'm interested to see what you'll think of it too!

Donna @ The Happy Booker said...

Wow! You love cliffhangers? That is probably my #1 pet peeve. Maybe I wouldn't feel that way though if, like you, I waited to read a series until I can read them all at once.

Donna @ The Happy Booker said...

Yep, the ending was awful. It was one of the most rant-tastic reviews I'd ever written.

I so agree with you- cliffhangers seem like a cop out most times - like they just wanted to prolong the series, and that feels so unfair to me! I'm glad to know that "Amelia Anne" has such an ending so I can avoid it!

I feel your pain with the cliffhangers. So many end like that now. I didn't mind a few every once in a while but, I feel like they all do now. Then you have to wait like a YEAR for the next one. I too am a digital reader so throwing my kindle would not be beneficial. Hopefully you don't have to throw any books in the future!
