Review- Everneath by Brodi Ashton

Title – Everneath
Author – Brodi Ashton
Publisher – Harper Collins
Date Published – January 24, 2012

This gorgeous cover and the intriguing summary had me super eager to get my hands on this debut novel by Brodi Ashton. Unfortunately it ended up being a bit less than what I was expecting. I love books that are based on mythology and are a bit dark, so when I saw that this was described as a reimagining of Hades and Persephone, I was quite excited. I don’t think this really lived up to any version of the Hades/Persephone story that I have ever read. First of all, I thought that it lacked the passion and emotional depth necessary to compare with that mythological couple. My main issue with Everneath was the writing style. Each chapter seemed to jump back and forth from past to present making it really hard to follow the story or connect in any real way with the characters. There were a lot of questions that were left unanswered and many things left unexplained by the end. I thought the characters were either unlikable or in Jack’s case, likable but boring. I will say that the last bit of the book was much better than I was expecting after how frustrated I was by the beginning. In short, Everneath was simply not for me. There have been many other people who really enjoyed this book though! Check out Lisa’s review at The Nocturnal Library for a more in depth and positive take on Everneath.

I find most fiction that deals with the Greek pantheon to be somewhat disappointing. They seem to try to be shoving them into the YA or UF categories and losing what made the mythology interesting along the way.

I agree for the most part, although I have to say that I did like Riordan's The Lightning Thief, but then I think about books like this and Wildefire and I have to agree. Most of the time it just doesn't seem to work.

This never sounded like something I'd enjoy, to be honest, so I didn't even bother, but I'm sorry you didn't like it more.
And of course, thanks for linking to The Library. :)

You haven't been around much. Missed you. :)

YES!! Finally! Someone else who didn't enjoy Everneath, meaning I'm not insane and/or emotionally devoid! All I've heard about this book is that it's raw and dramatic and a great mythological tale - and I couldn't see it. At all.

@Maja

It didn't really sound like one that would make my list of favorites, but I did expect to enjoy it much more than I did.
Sorry I was MIA for a few, I was sick then just wasn't in the mood for reviewing. I get like that sometimes lol Missed you too :)

@Celine

I'm glad you enjoyed it Celine, I know a lot of people did which is why I wanted to link to a positive review. I wouldn't want someone to not read a book based on my negative opinion of it. Thanks for stopping by :)

@SusieBookworm (Susanna)

Lol Susie, I know exactly how you feel. I can't even count the times that I have felt the exact opposite about a book than the majority. I think at one point I came to the conclusion that I only like mediocre books because it seemed that I hated what everyone else loved and loved what they hated. Its always nice to see that someone else whose opinions I value shares my viewpoint! Thanks so much for stopping by!

Oh no! I'm sorry you didn't like this book, you aren't the only one though. I've heard mixed things about it so I'm curious to see what I'll think of it myself. Such a shame about the characters. At least the dress on the cover is super pretty. :)

I think I liked Everneath more than you did, but it did tall short of my expectations too.
