Like y...I've wanted to read this book for ages. Like you said, the premise is so unique. I read Joe Hill's first book, Heart-Shaped Box, and that also has an unusual plot - a guy buys a ghost over the internet. Although I also remember the problems you mentioned (uneven pacing and characters that were hard to love) and probably would have given that about 3 stars, too.
